Sermon – June 20, 2010 – Fatherhood Matters
I’m going to talk about Fatherhood today but the message isn’t just for fathers. It’s as much for mothers and for children as it is for dads so I hope that all will listen in. I don’t have to tell you today that our nation is in a serious state of disrepair. And I’m not just talking about our economy. Almost every social statistic you can imagine is heading in the wrong direction.
July 2010 Newsletter – Orchestra Lesson
This is all a bit frustrating, but then a few others approach to let you know that they have decided not to come at all since the selected music is not to their liking. Although they can play it and you, as director, believe it to be the best piece for this particular orchestra to perform for the queen, it simply does not suit their preferences.
The symphony only becomes more difficult when two clarinet players inform you that they are quite upset because they weren’t picked for solos. Their skills are indeed superb, but alas, the selected piece simply doesn’t feature their instruments. It’s nothing personal, just the way the piece is written. When you hesitate to change it, however, they storm off the stage in a huff.
Today, we want to consider questions related to another topic. It’s been said that there are only two things that are certain in life. Something and taxes. What is that something? Today, we’re going to talk about taxes, no, we’re going to talk about death. Before we do, let’s talk about some very deadly places. (Joke).
Death is a pretty dead topic, but in all actuality, I’ve found that many people have questions about death and many more have incorrect information or warped understandings of what death is and what it isn’t. And so, let’s begin to answer these very important questions today. Please turn to 2 Corinthians 5.
We began to discuss the conflict between Creation and Evolution and found out last week that Jesus, along with at least 10,000 current scientists, all believe in the first couple chapters of Genesis.
We saw several examples of so called evolutionary evidence that have now been proven wrong or intentionally faked and we looked at the modern evidence, more and more and more of which overwhelmingly and increasingly proves what we’ve had here in Genesis for the past 3600 years.
So we will look back there this morning to help us with the second FAQ that is raised from time to time. The question of Where Did We Come From? Now that’s a pretty important question and how we answer that question can have a huge impact on how we live. If we’re simply the result of matter plus energy plus chance, than there cannot possibly be any standard by which right and wrong can be measured. Right and wrong would be purely human ideas that we have come up with to help govern societies to our own liking. Ultimately nothing could be intrinsically wrong.
Sermon – May 23, 2010 – Frequently Asked Questions About the Bible, Part 2
We said last week that it is crucial to start these frequently asked questions about God with the Bible because if it is not a reliable and trustworthy source of information, we certainly don’t want to use it to answer the most important questions of life, death, and eternity. We also said, however, that if it is indeed reliable and trustworthy that we would be foolish and ignorant not to make it our guide and authority for all of life.
